Donation Box Made to Measure — the Fully Enclosed Acrylic Box

An acrylic glass workshop in Germany for over 20 years

Unlike a display case, this box is closed at the top and at the bottom: the base is built in, the lid simply sits on top. With a coin slot it becomes a donation box, a raffle box or a ballot box — without a slot it becomes a sealed display box that can also be hung on the wall if you wish. Configurator in 3 minutes, delivery time approx. 8 working days.

Three things the same box can do

In the configurator it is called a “donation box” — technically it is the generic, fully enclosed made-to-measure acrylic box. The slot, the lid and the hanging eyelets decide what it turns into.

1. Donation box with a coin slot

For clubs, churches, animal shelters, shops, practices and fundraising campaigns. You specify the slot width and the slot depth yourself, in millimetres — from a narrow coin slot right through to a slot for folded notes or envelopes. Order the lid screwed down and nobody can get at the contents unnoticed.

2. Sealed box without a slot

Leave both slot fields at 0 — and you receive an acrylic box that is closed on every side: as a dust-tight display box for collectables and original packaging, as a raffle or ballot box (with a slot after all), as a sales or presentation box on the counter.

3. A case for wall mounting

The most common “detour” through this configurator: anyone who wants to hang a display case on the wall needs a base built into it rather than a case that is placed over the object. That is exactly what this box is — without a slot, with hanging eyelets in the back panel. How that works →

The difference from an acrylic display case: base fixed, lid on top

A made-to-measure display case is open at the bottom and is placed over the object. This box is a closed container: base, four walls and a lid. It is not placed over anything, it is loaded from above — the object goes in, then you put the lid on.

Structurally the box is a made-to-measure display case turned through 180°: the firmly screwed base panel sits at the bottom, and at the top the top panel sits flush on the front, back and side panels instead — no separate lid frame, just a single sheet of acrylic. It is held in place by one plug connection in the middle of the left side and one on the right. How firmly is up to you:

Lid simply laid on

Top panel seen from above: one continuous slot near the left edge and one near the right edge, into which the tongue of the side panel engages Top view: one continuous slot per side

The top panel sits flush and has one continuous slot just inside the edge on the left and on the right — that is where the tongue of the side panel engages. The lid sits securely, yet can be lifted off by hand at any time — handy for emptying the box and for anything you open regularly.

Lid screwed down

Top panel seen from above: the standard plug connection in the same places — two slots with a screw hole between them Top view: two slots with a screw hole between them

With “screwed down”, our standard plug connection sits in the same places: a plug on the side panel, slots with a screw hole in the top panel, secured with a screw and a nut — just as everywhere else in the Sora plug system. The lid can then only be released with a tool. For donation boxes that is the decisive point: nobody lifts the lid off in passing and helps themselves.

Both versions cost the same

Lid loose or screwed down, with or without a coin slot, with or without hanging eyelets — all of that is free of surcharge. Only a back panel in black or reflective acrylic carries a small material surcharge.

The coin slot: you specify it in millimetres

The slot sits in the lid. Unlike the box dimensions (cm), you give it in millimetres — with collection boxes a few millimetres make all the difference.

The three rules for the slot:

No slot wanted? Set both fields to 0 max. slot width = box width − 20 mm max. slot depth = box depth − 20 mm

The two dimensions belong together: if you want a slot, enter width and depth, each at least 3 mm. The 20 mm margin makes sure the lid keeps enough material all round and stays rigid.

Which slot dimensions make sense?

Values drawn from customer orders — you are not tied to any of these sizes.
PurposeSlot widthSlot depthNote

Folded ballot papers120–180 mm10–15 mmBallot box, members' meeting

Tip: put whatever is going to be posted into the box on the table first and measure it. A slot may well be a little larger than what goes through it — one cut too tight will annoy everyone who wants to post something later on.

A display case on the wall: why it takes this box

A classic made-to-measure display case has no base of its own — it is placed over an object standing on a piece of furniture. On the wall that does not work. There you need a base built into the box that carries the weight.

How to order the wall version

Acrylic box on the wall, hung from two keyhole eyelets in the back panel near the top edge Keyhole eyelets in the back panel

In the configurator: choose wall mounting “with” and leave both slot fields at 0. You receive the sealed box with two keyhole-shaped hanging eyelets near the top edge of the back panel — at no extra charge. The head of the screw passes through the round opening, then the box is hooked on and slid down into the narrow neck.

What you should know about fitting it

Two screws in the wall, the box is hooked onto them Plugs/screws supplied by you — depending on the wall

The matching wall plugs and screws are not included: plasterboard, brick and concrete each need different fixings. Use fixings that suit your wall and the weight of the box plus its contents — if in doubt, ask us beforehand.

The wall version will get a page of its own later

For now the order goes through the donation box configurator — construction and price are identical, only the name in the basket reads “Donation Box Made to Measure”. If you need a different item name (for your bookkeeping, for instance), just drop us a line: get in touch.

How to configure your box in 3 minutes

The configurator calculates as you go — you see the price and the outside dimensions straight away.

Enter the inside dimensions

Width, depth and height in cm — the usable space inside.

Important: inside dimensions, not outside dimensions!

Define the slot

Width and depth in mm — or both at 0 for the sealed box.

Choose lid & back panel

Lid loose or screwed down, back panel clear, black or reflective.

Inside dimensions vs. outside dimensions — the most important point before you order:

You enter the inside dimensions, that is the usable space. Because of the material thickness and the plug system, the outside dimensions come out slightly larger:

outside width = inside width + 14 mm outside depth = inside depth + 8 mm outside height = inside height + 11 mm

The box is closed at the top and at the bottom — which is why the height gains a little more than it does on an open display case. The live calculation in the configurator shows the finished outside dimensions as well.

Size limits

Width and height are possible up to 110 cm, the depth up to 55 cm, and the minimum dimension is 6 cm. The combination rule matters: of width, depth and height, only one dimension may exceed 50 cm. We make larger combinations to order — send us the dimensions and you will receive a quotation without obligation.

Back panel: clear, black or reflective

Clear (4 mm) is the standard and is included in the base price. Black and reflective (mirror) acrylic (3 mm) carry a small surcharge depending on the area — the configurator shows the price straight away. A black background makes light-coloured objects and lettering stand out, while reflective acrylic doubles the effect of collectables and makes the box look deeper.

The Sora plug-and-screw system: no glue, fully demountable

We do not glue and we do not mould in one piece — we supply the box as a kit with small screws and nuts. You assemble it yourself in a few minutes — and it is precisely this system that makes the screwed-down lid possible in the first place.

By the way: our plug system is no flash in the pan — we developed it ourselves more than 20 years ago and had it officially registered as a utility model. View the original document as a PDF ↗

Material and quality

The same acrylic glass as in our made-to-measure display cases: high-grade industrial PMMA — crystal clear, lightfast, less prone to breaking than glass.

4 mm clear acrylic glass
3 mm black & reflective back panel

Why acrylic beats glass for a donation box

A donation box rarely stands in a sheltered spot: it travels from the counter to the club event, gets knocked, moved and carried around. At the same thickness, acrylic glass is far more impact-resistant and roughly half the weight of silicate glass — and if something does break, it does not shatter into sharp splinters. On top of that, the material does not yellow, not even after years in a shop window.

Cleaning: a soft cloth, lukewarm water and a little washing-up liquid — or an acrylic glass cleaner. Never use glass cleaner containing alcohol or ammonia, and never use scouring agents, as they attack the surface.

What you should know once the parcel arrives

Do not be alarmed: the protective film

When your parcel arrives, the acrylic parts will probably look blue, green, white or even scratched. That is the protective film covering every part on both sides to prevent scratches during production and shipping (reflective elements are filmed on the front only).

Simply lift the film at one corner with your fingernail — acrylic cannot be scratched by a fingernail. Underneath you will find crystal-clear, flawless acrylic glass.

Frequently asked questions about the made-to-measure donation box

Can I also order the box without a coin slot?

Yes — that is actually common. Leave both slot fields in the configurator (slot width and slot depth) at 0 and we will make a fully enclosed acrylic box without any opening at all. The price does not change.

I need a display case that hangs on the wall. Is that the same box?

Yes. A made-to-measure display case has no base of its own and is placed over the object — but on the wall you need a base built into it. That is exactly what this box is: order it without a slot and with wall mounting “with” and you will receive the sealed box with two hanging eyelets in the back panel. We do not supply wall plugs and screws, because every wall needs different fixings.

How secure is the lid against being opened without permission?

The lid is the upper acrylic sheet that sits flush on the front, back and side panels — held in place by one plug connection in the middle of the left side and one on the right. In the “loose” version, a tongue of the side panel engages in a continuous slot in the sheet; the lid can be lifted off by hand, for emptying the box for example. With “screwed down”, the standard Sora plug connection with a screw and a nut sits in the same places — and then the lid only comes off with a tool. For donation boxes we always recommend “screwed down”. The box has no lock in the true sense of the word.

What are the maximum slot dimensions?

The slot width may be no more than the box width minus 20 mm, and the slot depth no more than the box depth minus 20 mm. On a box 20 cm wide, a slot width of 180 mm is therefore the maximum. Both figures are given in millimetres and must be at least 3 mm.

Are the dimensions in the configurator inside or outside dimensions?

Always inside dimensions — that is, the space inside the box. Because of the material thickness and the plug system, the outside dimensions come out slightly larger:

  • outside width = inside width + 14 mm
  • outside depth = inside depth + 8 mm
  • outside height = inside height + 11 mm

The live calculation in the configurator shows the outside dimensions as well — handy when the box has to fit a particular shelf.

How large can the box be?

Width and height up to 110 cm, depth up to 55 cm, minimum dimension 6 cm. In addition: of width, depth and height, only one dimension may exceed 50 cm. We make larger combinations to order — send us the dimensions using the contact form.

What do the lid, the slot and the hanging eyelets cost extra?

Nothing. A lid loose or screwed down, a coin slot in any size and the hanging eyelets in the back panel are all free of surcharge. There is a material surcharge only for a black or reflective back panel — the price appears immediately in the live calculation.

Can I have the box lettered or covered with stickers?

We do not produce lettering ourselves. Stickers and vinyl lettering hold very well on acrylic glass, though — many clubs put their logo and the purpose of the collection on the front. In that case choose a black back panel, which makes light-coloured lettering stand out clearly.

Does the acrylic glass yellow over time?

No. The acrylic glass we use does not yellow and does not become brittle even after standing in direct sunlight for years. Important: the acrylic glass itself is UV-stable, but it offers no UV protection for the contents — sensitive objects do not belong in direct sunlight.

One part is scratched or broken — do I have to buy everything again?

No. Because nothing is glued, every single part can be reordered — lid, base, side panel or back panel. You will find the spare parts in the spare parts configurator.

Only one part broken?

Thanks to the plug system, every component can be reordered individually — all you need are the dimensions of your box.
