CD, DVD & Blu-ray Racks in Acrylic — Ready-Made or Made to Measure

Acrylic display case manufactory in Germany for over 20 years

Media collections grow – racks do not. Sora manufactures acrylic racks for CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays and vinyl: as ready-made modular racks and towers that can be joined horizontally and vertically into a whole wall, or as a made-to-measure rack that fits your recess exactly. Transparent instead of solid – the collection stays visible, the furniture disappears.

Why acrylic works differently for media collections than wood

A media rack in acrylic glass has an effect no wooden furniture has: it steps back visually. What stays visible are the covers – the rack itself almost disappears.

The second difference is modularity. Our modular racks and towers can be joined together horizontally and vertically: you start with one rack and build a whole wall from it over the years – without ending up with five different pieces of furniture side by side. Every element is suitable on its own, free-standing or wall mounted.

The third point is the fit. Media collections almost always end up in an existing recess: next to the fireplace, under the sloping ceiling, between two doors. That is exactly what the made-to-measure rack is for – width, depth, height and the number of shelves freely selectable, made in the same workshop as the standard racks.

And finally: unlike closed display cabinets, racks are open, so you can reach the discs quickly in everyday use. If you want to keep a collection permanently dust-free, combine the rack with a display cabinet with a front panel.

Where acrylic racks pay off most

Six typical situations from the living room.

Several transparent modular CD racks joined into one continuous wall

The CD collection that grew

The large modular rack holds 223 CD cases. Several racks side by side make one continuous wall – expandable whenever the collection grows.

DVD and Blu-ray modular racks in acrylic side by side on the wall

DVD & Blu-ray mixed

DVD and Blu-ray cases have different heights. Instead of a compromise height, combine the matching modular racks – same look, correct shelf height.

Narrow acrylic tower with CDs in a recess next to the television

The narrow tower

Just 17,3 cm wide: the tower fits into any gap – next to the television, in the hallway, under the stairs. Can be mounted horizontally or vertically.

Vinyl on the wall

A cover is a picture: the Vinyl Frame takes an LP sleeve and turns it into a wall object – changeable whenever you fancy a different cover.

Where no furniture fits, the made-to-measure rack does: width, height, depth and the number of shelves freely selectable – also for cassettes, manga, games or audiobooks.

Games & collector boxes

Switch, PS5 and retro games have their own case sizes. A made-to-measure rack or a display cabinet brings them into one consistent grid – steelbooks included.

Case dimensions are the usual standard sizes (width × depth/thickness × height when shelved) – digipaks, steelbooks and box sets differ. Tip: tap the link in the last column to open the item or the rack configurator directly.
The material thickness is always the same: 4 mm clear acrylic glass, with a back panel in black or reflective (mirror) acrylic in 3 mm.

How to configure your made-to-measure rack in 3 minutes

The rack configurator guides you step by step – you set the recess, it works out the shelves.

Measure the space

Width, depth and height of the recess or wall area the rack may occupy.

Better to leave 1 cm of clearance to the wall.

Set the shelves

The number of shelves and columns determines the shelf height – take the case height plus about 1 cm as your guide.

Shelf height: CD 14,5 cm · Blu-ray 18,2 cm · DVD 24,4 cm.

Choose the back panel

Transparent lets the wall colour show through, black gives covers a calm background, reflective makes the room look larger.

Shelf height = case height plus about 1 cm

So that the cases can be pulled out comfortably, allow around one centimetre more per shelf than the case height – the ready-made racks do exactly the same (shelf height CD 14,5 cm, Blu-ray 18,2 cm, DVD 24,4 cm). The dimensions given are always inside dimensions; the outside dimensions are slightly larger because of the material thickness and the slot-together system:

outside width = inside width + 14 mm outside depth = inside depth + 8 mm outside height (without base) = inside height + 7 mm

Tip: reckon on around 1 cm of case thickness per CD and about 1,4 cm per DVD – then you know in advance how many titles will fit on a shelf.

Think modular: one rack first, the wall later

The modular racks and towers can be joined horizontally and vertically. If you are not sure how large the collection will become, start with one element and add more later – the front stays continuous, because the modules are screwed to each other instead of merely standing side by side.

Rack or cabinet – how dust-free does it need to be?

An open rack is practical for everyday use: you can reach in quickly, but you do have to wipe the top edges from time to time. If the collection really is to stay dust-free – with rare first pressings, for example – a made-to-measure display cabinet with a hooked-in front panel is the better choice.

Vinyl: a frame for the wall, a made-to-measure rack for the collection

For individual favourite covers there is the Sora Vinyl Frame (inside dimensions 31,7 × 31,7 cm, cover changeable). For the record collection itself, configure a made-to-measure rack with the appropriate shelf depth – LPs need at least 33 cm of shelf height and depth.

Material and quality

We work exclusively with high-grade PMMA acrylic glass of industrial quality – crystal clear, lightfast and in the lasting Sora quality.

Lightfastness and UV behaviour

The acrylic glass we use does not yellow and does not become brittle even after years in direct sunlight. Important: the acrylic glass itself is UV-stable, but it offers no UV protection for the collectable on display. Printed card reacts sensitively to sunlight: CD booklets and vinyl covers in particular fade visibly next to a window within a few years – the spines first.

The Sora plug-and-screw system: nothing glued, fully demountable

We do not glue and we do not cast in one piece: every rack is delivered as a construction kit with small screws and nuts. That is precisely why the modular system works: two racks are not simply placed side by side, they are screwed to each other – and form one continuous front.

By the way: our plug-and-screw system is no passing fashion – we developed it ourselves more than 20 years ago and had it officially registered as a utility model. View the original document as a PDF ↗

What you should know after delivery

Don’t be alarmed: the protective film

When your parcel arrives, the acrylic parts will probably look blue, green, white or even scratched. That is the protective film covering every part on both sides to prevent scratches during production and shipping (reflective elements are filmed on the front only).

Simply lift the film at one corner with your fingernail – acrylic cannot be scratched by a fingernail. Underneath, crystal-clear, flawless acrylic glass comes to light.

Frequently asked questions about acrylic media racks

How many CDs, DVDs or Blu-rays will fit in?

The CD modular rack holds 223 CD cases, the two-column version 148 and the CD tower 65. The DVD modular rack takes 90 DVDs (two-column 60, tower 39), the Blu-ray modular rack 110 discs (two-column 64, tower 32). All figures are based on regular cases; digipaks and steelbooks need more space.

Can several racks be joined together?

Yes, that is the heart of the modular system: modular racks and towers can be joined horizontally and vertically and so form one continuous front. CD, DVD and Blu-ray modular racks can also be combined with each other.

Free-standing or mounted on the wall?

Both. All modular racks and towers are designed to stand free or to be wall mounted. With wall mounting it is important that the substrate can carry the weight of the filled racks: a full CD wall quickly comes to several kilograms.

What if no standard size fits my recess?

Then configure a made-to-measure rack: width, depth, height and the number of shelves are freely selectable, manufactured to the same quality as the standard racks. As a guide for the shelf height: CD 14,5 cm, Blu-ray 18,2 cm, DVD 24,4 cm.

Can I house records as well?

Yes. For the collection, use a made-to-measure rack with at least 33 cm of shelf height and depth. For individual favourite covers on the wall there is the Sora Vinyl Frame with inside dimensions of 31,7 × 31,7 cm; the cover can be changed at any time.

Does the collection stay dust-free in an open rack?

Largely. The cases stand close together, and dust settles mainly on the top edges, where it can simply be wiped off. If you want it completely dust-free, choose a made-to-measure display cabinet with a hooked-in front panel.
