Why sports memorabilia suffer particularly quickly

Signatures are the most delicate thing about any piece of sports memorabilia: felt-tip pen on leather or plastic fades in the light, smudges when touched and takes dust into the surface.

A signed ball lying openly on a shelf visibly loses quality within a few years: the signature fades, the ball surface picks up dust, and every touch smudges the writing a little further. With leather and plastic balls there is also the slow loss of pressure – a ball lying on a shelf develops a flat spot over time.

A closed display case with a ball stand solves both: the ball stands free on the ring instead of on its own seam, and nobody touches it any more. Our ready-made ball display cases come with a black base and a black back panel – a light signature shows to best effect against that background.

With golf balls the task is a different one: here it is about many identical objects. For those there are display cabinets with ready-made recesses for 32 or 64 balls – and a configurator of their own that works out the number of ball positions automatically from your dimensions.

The figures given are the inside dimensions of the case in question; the ball deliberately has a little clearance inside. Tip: tap the link in the last column to open the item or the matching configurator directly. If nothing fits exactly, configure a display case to measure – the material thickness is the same everywhere: 4 mm clear acrylic glass, back panel in black or reflective (mirror) acrylic in 3 mm.

Golf-ball cabinet or made-to-measure case – how the configuration works

For golf balls there is a configurator of its own that works out the ball positions automatically. Everything else runs through the made-to-measure display case or the display cabinet.

Measure the collectable

Width, depth and height at the widest point – for balls the diameter, for boots and trophies the actual footprint.

A ball stand needs about 2 cm of extra height.

Enter the inside dimensions

Enter the measurements plus clearance as inside dimensions. In the golf-ball configurator you enter the compartment dimensions instead – it works out the number of balls itself.

Ball plus stand – the height is easily underestimated

A ball on its stand sits around 2 cm higher than the ball alone – which is why the ready-made ball display cases are taller inside than they are wide. If you configure your own, include the stand in your calculation. The dimensions given are always inside dimensions; the outside dimensions are slightly larger because of the material thickness and the slot-together system:

outside width = inside width + 14 mm outside depth = inside depth + 8 mm outside height (without base) = inside height + 7 mm

Tip: with balls allow 1,5–2 cm of clearance all round – then the ball can be put in comfortably without brushing the signature against an edge.

The golf-ball configurator works out the positions

In the golf-ball cabinet configurator you enter the dimensions you want – how many balls fit in is calculated automatically. That way you get exactly the right cabinet for a particular wall recess or a planned collection size. Trophies, shirts and unusual formats

For everything that does not fit into a ball display case there is the made-to-measure display case – from a trophy to a club or a helmet. A framed shirt or a flat memento belongs rather in the made-to-measure display box, which is the only version that can also be mounted on the wall.

Lightfastness and UV behaviour

The acrylic glass we use does not yellow and does not become brittle even after years in direct sunlight. Important: the acrylic glass itself is UV-stable, but it offers no UV protection for the collectable on display. Signatures are the critical point here: felt-tip pens and markers fade in sunlight considerably faster than the material underneath – a signed ball certainly does not belong next to a window.

The Sora plug-and-screw system: nothing glued, fully demountable

We do not glue and we do not cast in one piece: the display case is delivered as a construction kit with small screws and nuts. So you can get to the ball again at any time – and if the front panel gets scratched you replace just that one panel instead of the whole case.

What you should know after delivery

Don’t be alarmed: the protective film

When your parcel arrives, the acrylic parts will probably look blue, green, white or even scratched. That is the protective film covering every part on both sides to prevent scratches during production and shipping (reflective elements are filmed on the front only).

Simply lift the film at one corner with your fingernail – acrylic cannot be scratched by a fingernail. Underneath, crystal-clear, flawless acrylic glass comes to light.

Frequently asked questions about sports display cases

Is the ball stand included?

Yes. All ready-made ball display cases are supplied with a matching ball stand; the football boot case comes with two height-adjustable shoe stands, the upright boxing glove case with a glove stand. The base and back panel of these cases are black, so that signatures show to best effect.

Which display case suits which ball?

Football and volleyball: 24,5 × 24,5 × 28 cm inside dimensions. Basketball: 26,5 × 26,5 × 30 cm. Handball: 24 × 22 × 24 cm. Rugby size 5: 33 × 20 × 24 cm, size 3: 28 × 17 × 19 cm. How many golf balls will fit into a cabinet?

The ready-made Golf-Ball Display Cabinet holds 64 balls, the 32-ball version 32 and the small table top display case five. If you need different dimensions, the golf-ball configurator works out the number of balls automatically from the dimensions you want.

Does the display case protect the signature from fading?

From dust, abrasion and handling: yes, and that is the most common reason why signatures suffer. From UV light: no. The acrylic glass does not yellow itself, but it does not filter UV radiation either; markers and felt-tip pens still fade in direct sunlight. So do not place signed pieces next to a window.

Can I hang the display case on the wall?

Both Golf-Ball Display Cabinets are designed for both free-standing and wall mounting. The ball display cases are free-standing. For the wall there is also the made-to-measure display box, the only made-to-measure version with a wall fixing.

What about signed shirts?

A shirt is typically presented framed and flat. A low made-to-measure display box with a wall fixing is suitable for that, or a low display case over a black carrier sheet (acrylic cut to size).
