Made to Measure Display Cases for Model Cars — 1/18 to 1/87

Acrylic display case manufactory in Germany for over 20 years

Made to measure acrylic display cases for model cars – as dust protection, presentation and protection in one. For the single 1/18 rarity just as much as for a collection that has grown over the years: made to the millimetre, with a demountable plug-and-screw system – or as a proven ready-made display cabinet for 1/18, 1/24, 1/43 and 1/87.

Display case, display cabinet or dust protection for model cars – what fits when?

A model car display case from our workshop is a transparent protective cover made of PMMA acrylic glass (commonly called Plexiglas) that is placed precisely over your model – or a display cabinet with compartments in which an entire collection stands side by side, free of dust.

Model cars are particularly sensitive to dust: whatever settles in the radiator grille, the spoked wheels, the air intakes and the open cockpit can hardly be removed completely with a brush or compressed air – and etched parts, aerials and windscreen wipers break all too easily in the attempt. A closed display case solves the problem once and for good.

There are two routes to choose from: single piece or collection. A special model – the 1/18 rarity, the signed racing car, the large 1/8 construction kit – gets its own made to measure display case, ideally with a reflective (mirror) acrylic base that reveals the chassis and the exhaust system. As the collection grows, a ready-made display cabinet with many compartments is usually the more economical and clearer solution: our standard cabinets have been matched to the common scales for years.

The two can be combined: many customers put the collection into compartment cabinets on the wall and single out two or three favourite models under an individual display case on the sideboard.

Note on brands: Minichamps, AUTOart, Norev, Schuco, Herpa, Wiking, Maisto, Bburago, Spark, Hot Wheels and all other brands mentioned belong to their respective rights holders. Sora Shop is a manufacturer of made to measure acrylic display cases, independent of any model maker, and has no business relationship with any of these manufacturers. Our display cases and cabinets are suitable, among other things, for protecting model vehicles.

Which model cars benefit most from a display case

Six typical cases from practice – from the single show piece to the collector wall.

Single 1/18 model car under a Sora acrylic display case with a reflective base

1/18 – the show piece

Minichamps, AUTOart, Norev or GT Spirit in 1/18 are eye-catchers and investments at the same time. A made to measure single display case with a reflective base also shows the chassis and the underbody.

Model car display cabinet holding many 1/43 models in individual compartments

1/43 – the collection that has grown

In 1/43 dozens of models come together quickly. A compartment cabinet brings 18 vehicles onto the wall at a glance – each one protected from dust behind the hooked-in front panel.

Slot-car display cabinet with sloping compartments and slots for the guide blade

Slot cars 1/24 & 1/32

Slot-car cabinets have sloping compartment floors (12,5°) and slots for the guide blade – the cars stand securely and you look down into the cockpit.

Display cabinet with long compartments for 1/87 model trucks and articulated lorries

Trucks & buses in 1/87

Herpa and Wiking trucks are long and flat. The truck cabinet with 70 cm wide compartments takes whole articulated lorries without them hiding one another.

Several Formula 1 model cars tiered on an acrylic staircase under a display case

Motorsport & Formula 1

Formula 1 models with wings and aerials need room above them. On an acrylic staircase the cars stand in tiers – each one stays visible, all under one display case.

Large 1/8 model car under a made to measure acrylic display case in a special size

Large construction kits 1/12 & 1/8

Pocher, DeAgostini or Amalgam models quickly reach 40 to 60 cm in length. For these we make display cases in special sizes – on request with a flush or reflective base.

Scales, typical model dimensions & the matching display case

Reference values for the common scales – the typical dimensions of a mid-size car and the solution that suits it. Important: the length of the model is the width of the display case.

The figures are rounded reference values for a mid-size car; sports cars, SUVs and commercial vehicles differ – please measure your own model before ordering. Tip: tap the link in the last column to open the item or the matching configurator directly.
The material thickness is always the same: 4 mm clear acrylic glass, a back panel in black or reflective acrylic 3 mm – regardless of scale and size.

How to configure your model car display case in 3 minutes

The online configurator guides you step by step – no data sheet, no queries needed.

Measure the model

Length, width (including wing mirrors) and height at the largest point in each case – count in wings, aerials and opened doors.

The length of the car is the width of the display case!

Enter the inside dimensions

Enter the measurements plus a little clearance as inside dimensions – that is the room your model gets.

Inside dimensions, not outside dimensions!

Base & back panel

No base, standard base or flush – back panel and base in clear, reflective or black acrylic.

A reflective base reveals the chassis and exhaust.

Length = width: the most common mistake with model cars

In the configurator you enter the width, depth and height of the display case – so the length of your model car is its width. The figures are always inside dimensions (the room for the model); the outside dimensions come out slightly larger because of the material thickness and the plug-and-screw system:

outside width = inside width + 14 mm outside depth = inside depth + 8 mm outside height (without base) = inside height + 7 mm

Tip: allow 0,5 to 1 cm of clearance per side so that the model can be taken out comfortably without the mirrors or aerials catching on the display case.

Material: always 4 mm – there is nothing to choose

Our transparent acrylic glass is always 4 mm thick – whether it is a 1/43 display case or an 1/8 large model. Only a back panel in black or reflective acrylic is 3 mm thick. So you do not decide on the material thickness, only on the base and the back panel.

Several models: cabinet, rack or staircase instead of individual cases

From about three vehicles onwards a compartment cabinet is almost always worthwhile – per model it costs considerably less than individual display cases and works better as a collector wall. If the models are to stand visibly one behind the other, an acrylic display staircase tiers each row upwards towards the back – and a made to measure display case goes over it.

Very large models: oversize and special dimensions

In the standard configurator at most one of the three dimensions may exceed 50 cm. For wide diorama set-ups with several vehicles or for very large 1/8 models, use the oversize acrylic display case; for very long, flat set-ups (a race track scene, for example) there is the two-part split display case. Shipping to delivery addresses in Germany only. Oversize items carry an automatic shipping surcharge.

Material and quality

We work exclusively with high-grade PMMA acrylic glass of industrial quality – crystal clear, lightfast and in the lasting Sora quality.

Lightfastness and UV behaviour

The acrylic glass we use does not yellow and does not become brittle even after years in direct sunlight. Important: the acrylic glass itself is UV-stable, but it offers no UV protection for the collectable on display. Paintwork, decals and rubber tyres on model cars fade in direct sunlight – which is why the display case does not belong right next to a south-facing window.

The Sora plug-and-screw system: nothing glued, fully demountable

We neither glue nor mould in one piece; we supply the display cabinet as a construction kit with small screws and nuts. On the ready-made model car cabinets the front panel is simply hooked in – to rearrange the collection you just lift it off, without unscrewing anything.

By the way: our plug-and-screw system is no passing fashion – we developed it ourselves more than 20 years ago and had it officially registered as a utility model. View the original document as a PDF ↗

What you should know after delivery

Don’t be alarmed: the protective film

When your parcel arrives, the acrylic parts will probably look blue, green, white or even scratched. That is the protective film covering every part on both sides to prevent scratches during production and shipping (reflective elements are filmed on the front only).

Simply lift the film at one corner with your fingernail – acrylic cannot be scratched by a fingernail. Underneath, crystal-clear, flawless acrylic glass comes to light.

More than the display case: further solutions for your model car collection

Not every collection belongs under a classic display case. For several models, a tiered presentation or wall mounting, Sora has the matching made to measure solution.

Made to measure display cabinet

When none of the standard sizes fits: a cabinet with freely chosen compartments and columns – for mixed scales, for example, or for a particular niche width in a shelf.

Made to measure display box – also for the wall

An acrylic box closed on all sides with a lid (listed in the shop as a donation box). It is the only version that can also be wall mounted – ideal for a single model at eye level.

Frequently asked questions about model car display cases

Which display cabinet suits which scale?

For 1/18 the Model Car Display Cabinet 1/18 (compartment 30,0 × 12,9 × 13,6 cm), for 1/24 the 1/24 version (compartment 22,0 × 13,0 × 11,3 cm), for 1/43 and 1/64 the 1/43 version (compartment 14,9 × 7,1 × 6,5 cm) and for 1/87 the 1/87 version (compartment 22,0 × 5,0 × 4,9 cm). The full allocation with typical model dimensions is in the table above.

Are the dimensions in the configurator inside or outside dimensions?

Always inside dimensions – that is, the room available to your model. The outside dimensions come out slightly larger because of the material thickness and the plug-and-screw system:

  • outside width = inside width + 14 mm
  • outside depth = inside depth + 8 mm
  • outside height (without base) = inside height + 7 mm
How do I measure my model car correctly?

Measure the model as it stands finished: length overall (including the rear wing and add-on parts), width including the wing mirrors and height including the aerial. The length becomes the width of the display case. Add 0,5 to 1 cm of clearance per side.

Do Hot Wheels and Matchbox models (1/64) fit in the 1/43 cabinet?

Yes. The compartment of the Model Car Display Cabinet 1/43 measures 14,9 × 7,1 × 6,5 cm and takes 1/64 models easily – often even two side by side. Anyone who collects 1/64 exclusively and wants to use the compartments better is usually better served by a made to measure display cabinet.

Does the display case protect against fading and UV radiation?

The acrylic glass itself does not yellow and does not become brittle, but it offers no UV protection for the model. Paintwork, decals and rubber tyres still fade in direct sunlight – so do not place the display case right next to a south-facing window.

Can I hang the display cabinet on the wall?

Yes. All ready-made model car and slot-car cabinets can either be set up or fixed to the wall. Among the made to measure items, the made to measure display box is the version with wall mounting.

What is different about slot cars?

The slot-car cabinets have compartment floors sloping by 12,5° – you look down into the cockpit – and slots that take the guide blade so that the cars sit flat. They are available for 1/24 (compartment 45,0 × 22,0 × 10,4 cm), for 1/32 (compartment 45,0 × 18,0 × 10,4 cm) and as narrow towers for 1/32 and 1/43.

Can I extend the collection later?

Yes – that is what the modular version is for: the Modular Display Cabinet for Model Cars 1/18 can be joined horizontally and vertically with further modules to form a continuous collector wall. And because all our cabinets are screwed rather than glued, you can reorder individual parts at any time.
